Drawing upon his disgust at the avalanches of garbage around the city as inspiration, Beijing-based artist Wang Zhiyuan started collecting and organizing discarded plastic containers from the dumps. Wang says, “I thought it would be difficult to make these dead objects interesting or beautiful. But I discovered that if you bring order to them you can create beauty… I want my art to be about something bigger than me. If it wasn’t involved in society I would feel guilty.”
Wang’s response to the overloaded garbage dumps was a 36-foot tall (11-meter) tornado of plastic garbage called “Thrown to the Wind.”
