At this year’s Venice Art Biennale, Swiss contemporary artist Urs Fischer presents three life-size wax candle scultures. The figures are lit, and according to Designboom, “will violently self-destruct during the months-long show, as the wax melts and limbs start to drop off.”
Fischer’s scultures are made of wax pigments, wicks and steel structure. They are exquisitely built, with great detail given to realism and expressiveness. These pieces at the 2011 Venice Art Biennale reflect Fischer’s artistic practice of examining the nature of his materials, the act of making, and the unpredictable processes that can result from combining the two.
Urs Fischer is represented by Galerie Eve Presenhuber in Zurich.
