Japanese arts collective NAM with Numabooks, a group of book artists, collaborate to create mobile pop-up shops. Last summer they built one called “Numabookface” which featured hundreds of books stacked in the form of a gigantic human head. “Numabookface” was on display at the Ikijiri Institute of Design(IID).
Currently NAM and Numabooks have completed an installation of books shaped like a cat. Numabookcat is on display through October 30 at the NADiff Window Gallery.
Interestingly, these installations contain an interactive aspect where each person who approaches the pop-up shop is asked by a host – “tell me about yourself.” Based upon the attendee’s answer, the host, who also curated the selection of books, picks a book and sends it to the attendee several days later. For 4200 yen, you can have 12 books selected for you. You will receive one book per month in the mail for an entire year. What a wonderful idea!
