Remember those bright bold graphic prints seen on fabrics from the 1950s and 1960s? Most-likely they were either Marimekko or inspired-by Marimekko designs. During the 1960s fashion icon Jackie Kennedy introduced the Finnish textile and design company to the United States when she wore their dresses during her husband’s campaign.
Well, Marimekko makes another in-road to the USA by opening a flagship store tomorrow, October 6, in New York City! “The store is the spearhead of our strategy for the United States. Its mission is to showcase the world of Marimekko at its best, offering its full scope to American consumers” said President and CEO Mika Ihamuotila about the new store located in the Flatiron District at 200 Fifth Avenue between 23rd and 24th Street, at the convergence of Fifth Avenue and Broadway.
Playing an important role in growing Marimekko’s profile and brand image in the United States, the new store will feature Marimekko not just as a lifestyle brand, but as a way of life. Their unique graphic sensibility will be on everything from textiles to teapots to clothing, all of which are available for purchase. There is even an on-site seamstress!
For those of us who heart Marimekko but live far away from Manhattan, there are already six Marimekko stores inside various Crate and Barrel home furnishings stores around the United States. President and CEO Mika Ihamuotila has made an announcement of Marimekko’s intention to open 17 more, all inside existing Crate and Barrel stores.
