“Knitted Army” arm-knitted furnishings by Andrea Brena at DMY Berlin 2012

At last week’s DMY Berlin 2012 (International Design Festival), Italian designer Andrea Brena presented an array of home furnishings which were arm-knitted using discarded fabric strips from Italian textile factories. (Arm-knitting??? It’s just knitting with your arms instead of needles.)

Called the “Knitted Army,” Brena’s collection includes carpets, pillows and chairs. Using only his arms as tools, the Berlin-based designer created each piece from leftover cloth, and also stuffed the cushions and seats with the same scrap material. Talk about chunky gauge knitting! For a demo on arm-knitting see the video at the bottom of this post.
