Chiharu Shiota paints a scorched room with black thread

This installation piece sends shivers up my spine. What happened? An attack by a swarm of tarantulas? A chem-bio bomb?

“In Silence” was inspired by Berlin-based artist Chiharu Shiota‘s own traumatic memories as a child, having witnessed their neighbor’s house consumed by uncontrollable flames. Shita actually saw the neighbor’s grand piano burning.

Using miles of black wool thread, Shiota recreates the visceral feeling of entrapment by entirely encapsulating the contents of the installation by the thread. As if slowly painting a web of anxiety, the artist carefully crosses and knots the threads from floor to ceiling, from wall to wall. Shiota has been using webs of thread in her dramatic installations since 1996. See more of her work here.
