Humans are curious creatures especially when it comes to other humans. I mean, who doesn’t fling open the medicine cabinet, when visiting a friend’s or neighbor’s bathroom? Dutch photographer Erik Klein Wolterink capitalizes on this lust to explore others’ lives by exposing the innards of the kitchens of various ethnic groups as well as his own, his neighbor’s and a typical student’s. Opening cupboards, drawers, refrigerators and ovens, Wolterink shoots each enclosure separately, and then reassembles the image to create a single collaged composite image.
From the artist statement: “This is the raw material with which we must try to imagine who belongs to these kitchens… The kitchen is a metaphor for a complex, multicultural reality.”
