I can’t recall the last time I picked up a newspaper, and apparently a whole lot of other people can’t either because the newspaper industry is wilting faster than my parched plants sitting in the California sun. Lauren DiCioccio directly addresses the sad struggle of this medium which, along with a cup of coffee, many of us recall so fondly. Taking old issues of The New York Times, the California based artist hand-embroiders her work based upon imagery found on the printed page. Exquisite!
In DiCioccio’s artist statement she says, “The tedious handiwork and obsessive care I employ to create my work aims to remind the viewer of these simple but intimate pieces of everyday life and to provoke a pang of nostalgia for the familiar physicality of these objects.”
For those who will be in the San Francisco area during August (2012), DiCioccio will be having a solo show at the Jack Fischer Gallery.
