Concrete. It serves as the bones for high rise buildings, shopping centers, the foundation of our homes. Durable, cheap, and easy to work with, here are some unexpected uses for it.
1. Concrete Lace. Using ultra high performance concrete (fabricated by G.tecz) and suspension materials like ribbon or 1mm steal cable, designer Doreen Westphal created these ethereal vertical hanging pieces. Applications include window treatments, room dividers, and decorative wall coverings. (via)
2. Concrete business cards. These cards are much less likely to find themselves in the trash than most other business cards. For one, they are heavier than most. Second, they come with cute accessories like a pallet and a tiny box for storing them. About the cards, the designer Murmure says, “The refinement and the technique required for the typography highlight the harshness and the roughness of the used material.”
3. Modern concrete ring. The seven sides of this striking ring designed by 22 Design Studio represent the seven days of the week and ‘out turning of time day after day’. If you must have one, they are available for purchase here.
4. Concrete votives. I love the asymmetrical design of these small intimate candle holders. Each vessel is hand formed, hand cast, sanded, and then sealed and polished to attain and maintain its beauty and lustre. Click here to get them on etsy.
