I’ve been an admirer of artist Andrew Hem for a long time. As a young child, Hem fled Cambodia with his family to avoid the Khmer Rouge genocide. Growing up in the United States, the young artist struggled to reconcile the Khmer culture of his family with the urban culture of Los Angeles. From these dramatic experiences, Hem paints lush narratives of haunted people facing loss and alienation while living in otherworldy places.
Next month Andrew Hem is coming out with his first book “Dreams Toward Reality,” edited by art writer/collector/blogger Amanda Erlanson. See images from the book here.
