British artist Roanna Wells uses embroidery to make marks on cloth like a painter makes marks on canvas. Wells creates abstract works from aerial views of public events. On a single piece of woolen cloth, each person in the crowd is represented by a single black stitch. Taking events like the 2009 Obama Inauguration in Washington D.C. and the 2011 Election Protest in Moscow, “Interpersonal Spatial Arrangements” eliminates all contextual information, like buildings, focusing only on the pattern and self-organization of the individuals. Lovely!
