I would love to open one of these packages painted by Yrjo Edelmann. Pulling apart the sheets of gift wrap, I can hear the crinkling sound of the foil and feel the crispness of the paper on my hand. The Sweden-based artist challenges our perceptions of reality by painting hyper-realistic work of boxes wrapped in wrapping paper and string.
In 1993, Edelmann was catapulted into fame for his piece in the Absolut Vodka advertising campaign. The artist wrapped the vodka bottle in colored silk paper, taped it with masking tape, and painted the wrapped bottle. Since then Edelmann, also known as the “great illusionist” in Swedish contemporary art, has developed more complex and and ambiguous compositions of boxes wrapped in bright paper. His latest work featuring multiple wrapped boxes is being shown at the Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas, Texas through October 6, 2012.
