“The Source is the Goal” paintings by Devin Leonardi at the Altman Siegel Gallery in San Francisco

“The Source is the Goal” 2012 Oil on canvas 15 3/4 x 19 3/4 in.

Montana-based artist Devin Leonardi walks the fine line between photography and painting in his latest exhibit at the Altman Siegel Gallery in San Francisco. In “The Source is the Goal,” vintage photographs are simplified and combined into small oil paintings on canvas. The paintings draw attention to the nature of photographic illusion where the meaning of historical images blur without a caption or other context.

Even if you don’t care about the fallibility of photography, this exhibit can be enjoyed purely as breathtaking examples of figurative painting which draw upon classical painting traditions.

The Source is the Goal” by Devin Leonardi will be showing through October 20, 2012 at the Altman Siegel Gallery in San Francisco, California.
