“Dominant Species” by ROA at 941 Geary in San Francisco

“Tenderloin Pigeon” Mixed Media on Found Objects, 42×3.5×33″

One of my favorite street artists ROA is currently showing his work at 941 Geary in San Francisco. The 941 Geary exhibition space has been transformed into an urban wasteland with animals at every turn. Inspired by a road trip across America, the Belgium artist created imagery from the diversity of habitats and creatures he encountered. Once again ROA uses his signature style where interactive pieces can be physically manipulated and/or viewed at different angles to show different anatomical layers of decaying animals.

Constructed from found objects and salvaged materials, the large-scale installation provides a dystopian narrative about how mankind can overwhelm the natural world, displacing its native animals. Aging wood, rusting metal and skeletal remains fill the gallery. If you misplace you handbag amid the debris you might have a hard time finding it again. Redemption is found in the Belgium artist’s exquisite renderings of anatomical forms of local animals painted on discarded objects.

“Dominant Species” will be showing at the 941 Geary Gallery through November 3rd, 2012.
