Nature-inspired paper cuts by Rogan Brown

Artist Rogan Brown creates paper sculptures by layering sheets of paper, one on top of another, each with thousands of intricate cuts. Brown’s work is an exploration of patterns found in nature, “from the microscopic to the macroscopic, from individual cells to large scale geological formations.”

In the artist’s statement, Brown writes, “I am inspired in part by the tradition of scientific drawing and model making, and particularly the work of artist-scientists such as Ernst Haeckel. But although my approach involves careful observation and detailed “scientific” preparatory drawings these are always superseded by the work of the imagination; everything has to be refracted through the prism of the imagination, estranged and in some way transformed.

For more very intricate paper-cut art, see the work of Caroline Jane Harris, Tahiti Pehrson, Pablo Lehmann and Peter Callesen.
