Triangles bathed in light and color make up the world of Berlin based artist Shannon Finley. Finley constructs complex spaces divided into overlapping triangles. Rising up, pulling down, Finley’s spaces never settle down for a rest. Along with the spatial tricks, the radiant colors range from opaque to transluscent, joyful to menacing, glossy to matte.

Construct ‘Into the Fold’ installation, 2005-2008

Seeing these images makes me want to start folding paper. Right now.

This colorful installation is by artist UK James Roper. In these images, Roper folded many modular origami structures out of different colored paper, and hung them in rooms and narrow corridors exploring the different effects the work would create with the varied spaces.

Roper writes, “My work explores a variety of subjects from the heightened realities depicted in Baroque art and modern media to the restraint and release of energy found within complex structures such as the human body. I work in various mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture and film.”

In many cultures, a girl child is seen as a burden. Someone who will deplete precious family resources, so should be packed off for marriage as soon as possible. Inspired by this tragic view, Pakistani artist Nausheen Saeed created a series of sculptures depicting women as luggage.

To create these pieces, Saeed used fabric with traditional motifs, like paisley, wrapped around a fiberglass body. The luggage straps and handles reinforce the notion of women being enslaved, and helpless, dependent upon others to be moved. The work in these images were recently shown at the 2013 Scope Art Fair in New York City.

For the un-informed yet curious… yarn bombing is guerilla knitting, or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn, rather than spray paint or chalk. First appearing in 2004 in the Netherlands, yarn bombing has now become an outsider art phenomenon known to fiber enthusiasts around the world. In June 2011, Joann Matvichuk began International Yarn Bombing Day (IYBD) in Alberta, Canada. This year IYBD was held June 1 – June 8, 2013.

Russia based artist and photographer Alexey Bednij performs digital manipulations on photographs to create these fascinating images. Bednij’s usage of positive and negative spaces reminds me of Escher’s drawings of swarms of birds and butterflies.
