Sometimes the best designs come from the simplest ideas. Take 1,500 used soda bottles, fill with different hues of colored water, and hang each from a parking canopy. Magic happens! Created by Lincoln, Nebraska based designer Garth Britzman, “(POP)culture” is a stunning installation which uses the effect of the water pooling at the bottom of the bottles to make the work look like a ceiling of hanging flowers. My car (and I) would love to lounge in the shaded comfort of this colorful canopy!

The image of a large sea creature stranded inland, far from the comforts of its native habitat, the ocean, has got to be one of the most heart-wrenching sights imaginable. Created by Argentinean sculptor Adrián Villar Rojas for the 2009 Biennial of the End of the World, the life-size blue whale lies stretched in the woods outside Ushuaia, Argentina. Made of wood, clay and other materials, its surface bears the marks of a difficult long life – full of pockmarks and covered in scar-like craters.

If you would like to read more about this young artist, the New York Times recently had an article about his work now showing at the “Ungovernables” exhibit at the New Museum in New York City.

With the eye of an experienced forager, San Francisco-based artist Cassandra C. Jones collects photos from anonymous individuals on the Internet, and assembles them into works of art. For her current exhibit, “Photos Taken #drawings, ” now showing at the Eli Ridgway Gallery in San Francisco, Jones uses the lines of lighting bolts from different long-exposure images to form circular and animal shapes. In Jones’ universe, rabbits and dogs appear in the sky as lightening strikes through our neighborhoods. Above our homes, lightening bolts draw out circular forms. Lightening represents the distinctive hand of nature – drawing bold, meandering, thin, and fluid lines in the sky.

In a similar vein, Jones creates images by assembling and deconstructing photographs of hot air balloons. Removing the backgrounds of the initial images, the balloons are reduced to individual shapes and blocks of color. Flowers, woven patterns, and aquatic creatures emerge unexpectedly yet effortlessly.

“Photos Taken #drawings” will be showing at the Eli Ridgway Gallery in San Francisco through May 19, 2012.

Orticanoodles, the pseudonym for two Italian artists, Wally and Alita, recently released a series of portraits which are printed upon stencils with embedded lettered messages. These “stencil upon stencil” pieces feature well-known celebrities, political leaders, and artists combined with intricate stencil techniques. Explaining their work, Orticanoodles say, “All of them are shelled and brutalized…so they loose their superficial side, their public image, making them empty skulls. Sometimes this process is done as a form of social criticism and sometimes, simply, to mythicize Death.”

The Italian duo began their collaboration with handmade posters, then branched into street art, and now take part in major urban guerrilla campaigns. Read more about them in: Orticanoodles and the stencil.

Those lucky enough to be strolling along the Sumida River in central Tokyo last week were treated to a visual feast of 100,000 “simulated” hotaru (fireflies) floating down the river. As part of the inaugural Tokyo Hotaru Festival, Panasonic provided the LED lights, or “prayer stars,” for the festivities. Each glowing ball, made to resemble a swarm of fireflies, was designed to light up upon contact with the water. After illuminating a large stretch of the river, the 100% solar powered LEDs were all retrieved in a large net.

If you, like me, are smitten by fireflies, check out these stunning long-exposure photos of fireflies by Tsuneaki Hiramatsu.

Manheim, PA based Jake Longenecker, creator of “Free Fallin,” says, “The inspiration behind this project came from WWII era paratroopers. My objective was to capture the action and intensity of such a simple and graceful act, such as falling through the sky. I accomplished this by uniformly wrapping parts of my own body with tape, which were later assembled into the skydiver. I then added fluorescent orange Scotch tape to the goggles and backpack for added flare. The overall dimensions are roughly 4ft by 5ft. It is currently hanging under a skylight at my school.“

Austin, Texas based Abigail Colety, creator of “Game Night,” says, “When I contemplated such a creative task as creating sculptures out of tape I decided to use my memory of playing checkers during summers at my grandparent’s house and the joy it brought my family. As an artist, this concept was exciting because I was able to challenge myself with positions such as crossed legs and resting heads on hands. The transparent tape with the bold blackness of the checkerboard stripes and the checkers created an undeniable focus towards the game board and pieces.“

Louisville, KY based Michelle Noe says, “The light-weight yet super-strong nature of the Scotch Heavy Duty Packing Tape inspired the whimsical image of the “Tight Rope Tape Walker”. Perched high on a tight rope, she confidently balances atop a ball. Twelve rolls of tape later and twenty-four feet up in the air she held her pose trusting her tape strength.“

From Puyallup, WA Gavin Mann, creator of “The Creation of Adam,” says, “The sculpture had taken two weeks to finish. I had just gotten done with it on March 23 one day before the cutoff date so that was pretty scary. The sculpture its self is Adam on the left and god on the right. Getting the body’s to do the right thing and go where they were supposed to had to be by far hardest part of the whole sculpture. I’m really glad I got a chance to do this my senior year and have fun doing it to thank you Mark Jenkins for making this happen by making such a cool art form.”
